Vote Green

It is election time again in the Philippines. As you ponder who to vote for, you might consider these 'commandments' found on the Alyansa Tigil-Mina website:

"TEN COMMANDMENTS"
to Guide Voters in choosing Green Candidates

1. Thou shall not vote for candidates using 4Gs to win: Guns, Goons, Gold, Garbage. Vote for candidates who stand for the essential Ms in the genuine exercise of the right of suffrage: Malinis, Maayos, Matipid, Mapanindigan, Marangal, Mapayapa, Makatao, Maka-Kalikasan, Maka-Diyos. Support candidates known for their simple, pro-people and ecological lifestyle.

2. Thou shall not support candidates who nail, strap or plaster campaign materials on defenseless trees and other restricted sites. Vote for candidates who plant and love trees, use the least amount of campaign materials and abide by the campaign rules.

3. Thou shall not pick candidates who use smoke-belching vehicles that contribute to worsening air quality. Go for candidates on bicycles rather than those who come in a convoy of cars. Vote for those who use fewer vehicles in motorcades to reduce fuel consumption and car emissions.

4. Thou shall not fall for candidates who make beautiful speeches about their love for the people and the environment, but fail to match their words with deeds. Does the candidate walk his/her talk? Check if she/he is engaged in any environmental advocacy or project, or has financial interest in any polluting or environmentally-destructive business. Vote for those who live by what they say.

5. Thou shall not select candidates who profess to protect the environment, but are mute on what they intend to do. Ask thy candidates, point blank, how they intend to serve the interest of the environment. Vote for those who will work earnestly to heal and protect the environment.

6. Thou shall not choose candidates who are hooked to the outmoded "hakot-tambak-sunog" and fail to shut down illegal dumps. Vote for those who segregate their discards at home and in the work place and support ecological, low-cost and community-driven alternatives to dumps, landfills and incinerators.

7. Thou shall not vote candidates who ignore the health, environment, socio-economic and human rights concerns against "sanitary" landfills, "waste-to-energy," dams and similar infrastructure plans. Vote for candidates who will assert the people's sovereign rights to a clean, safe and healthy environment. Go for candidates who will work for sustainable economy that will respond to people's basic needs and not to the dictates of the World Bank and other international funding institutions.

8. Thou shall not elect candidates who want to build big dams and allow mining, logging and other extractive industries to rape our land and abuse human rights, especially the rights of our indigenous peoples. Vote for those who will take the cudgels for the human as well as non-human victims, such as trees, plants and wildlife, of environment-damaging human activities.

9. Thou shall not back candidates who will not take action against the health and safety threats of genetically modified crops and food products. Vote for candidates who will advance the people's right to safe and healthy foods as well as food production systems that nurture the earth.

10. Thou shall not vote for candidates who refuse to acknowledge global warming. Vote for candidates who see the needs for preventive and precautionary actions to stop climate change. For instance, go for candidates who oppose new coal power projects and support community-owned utilities using renewable energy sources.

Developed and issued by the EcoWaste Coalition with inputs from the Add Up Youth Environment Group, Bangon Kalikakasan Movement, Concerned Citizens Against Pollution, Ecological Society of the Philippines, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, Greenpeace Southeast Asia, Health Care Without Harm, Miriam PEACE, Mother Earth Foundation, Sagip Bukid and Mailet Diokno-Pascual.

Great ethos to live by and to keep in mind when voting. Whether or not you like a candidate, you have to exercise your right to vote, otherwise, you have no right to complain of the results.

yours is from sison not from sagunto just happened to see your site while surfing i feel that nobody is capable to run for mayor that is native in Sison i don't know where are the potential candidates now maybe abroad and the one left in Sison don't have the qualifications to run. my lolo told me that the same in 1970's from tarlac was the mayor for almost a decade hopefully in the future generation a native of Sison will be one again.

Hi EJ, Please tell your friends and neighbors about this site. Share your thoughts and comments on any issue. We'd love to hear from many Sisonians about lots of issues. Probably someday, some of the leaders here as well as in your group would think of serving their hometown.

We've got to move kailian!

Hay, so many wise words from wise men, too bad they're all dead! That seems to be the Modus operandi of Philippine politics these days. Don't like the messenger, kill them. Shame, shame, shame!

Whatever happened to healthy debate and exchange of ideas?! Is there no wise man left in our country to lead the way to a more enlightened democracy? Otherwise, the country itself is no better than what is going on in Africa. THE KILLINGS MUST STOP! For the love of Christ, it must stop!!!!!

Hi Abe, rise from the dead!

Come and tell people of our land, in a land where GOOD has changed to EVIL, and RECONCILIATION has become HATE and COMPETITION, competing to earn the most number of dead heads, hahahahaha.

you can just laugh at all this...INSANITY

Sigh....I know, unfortunately, I know.

That's why this blog is such a good outlet to vent your frustrations BUT, lets try to up-lift our people by not focusing on the negative.

Lord knows there's plenty of that in this world. Let's put our heads together and give the children hope for a better tomorrow by steering them in the direction of good will towards others, goodwill to themselves and goodwill to the environment that sustains us all, planet Earth. Let's help them focus all that negativity and turn it into something good. That's why we're running all these contests, right?

The children will be our leaders for a better tomorrow. As for the current events and politics, well (another sigh), we have to let go and let God and trust that HIS WILL BE DONE! That's why they call it FAITH.

President MLQ said "I prefer a country run like hell by Filipinos to a country run like heaven by Americans.” He further states “ Because, however bad a Filipino government might be, we can always change it."

When I google our beloved town ..Wikipedia describes it as “ Sison is a 4th class municipality in the province of Pangasinan, Philippines “

The towns are classified according to income which is as follows:
Municipalities
Class Average Annual Income
First P 50 M or more
Second P 40 M or more but less than P 50 M
Third P 30 M or more but less than P 40 M
Fourth P 20 M or more but less than P 30 M
Fifth P 10 M or more but less than P 20 M
Sixth Below P 10 M

Mrs. Kimi Cojuangco runs unopposed so by June she will be our next Mayor.

Our next Mayor describes herself as “not a politician,” she said that Sison will go places and “I will be the one to take you there.” .

“I know what the town needs. One is livelihood and I want to stir the town and improve the basic services and the town’s infrastructure,” she told the Inquirer.

Her husband Congressman Mark said that during his last three years in Congress, he will focus his service to Sison which he called his “hometown.” He said that he wanted to do a lot of things for Sison and the one who can help him is his wife and the mother of his children and who has a “pure heart.”

We all know that for many years their family have a hand in the local political arena. And as of now Sison is still a 4th class Municipality.

Now with their direct supervision of our towns political affairs I hope that they could raise it .. if not to a 1st class municipality at least a notch higher than our current municipal classification.
I'm looking forward to the day when you search for the town "SISON"... Wikipedia will describe it as... " Sison is a 1st class municipality in the province of Pangasinan, Philippines. "

Let's cross our hand and hope that they will take us to places .... places where there is economic growth, where progress can be felt not only by few but majority of the people... Congressman Mark .. we believe that your wife has a " pure heart ". It's about time that our beloved town will prosper.

A story to think about and share before the elections. . .

While walking down the street one day a Philippine
senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies.
His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at
the entrance.
"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you
settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official
around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with
you."
"No problem, just let me in," says the senator.
"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from the higher
ups. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in
heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."
"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in
heaven," says the senator.
"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."
And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator
and he goes down, down, down to hell.
The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a
green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in
front of it are all his friends nd other politicians who had
worked with him.
Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run
to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times
they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.
They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on
lobster, caviar and champagne.
Also present is the devil, who really is a very
friendly guy who is having a good time dancing and telling jokes.
They are all having such a good time that before the
senator realizes it, it is time to go.
Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while
the elevator rises...
The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens in
heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him, "Now it's time to visit
heaven."
So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of
contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and
singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes
it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.
"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in
heaven. Now choose your eternity."

The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers:
"Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been
delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."
So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes
down, down, down to hell.
Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the
middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his
friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black
bags as more trash falls from above.
The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around
his shoulders.
"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday
I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate
lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great
time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my
friends look miserable. What happened?"

The devil smiles at him and says, "Yesterday we were
campaigning. ...Today, you voted."

Tulog na Grecil
ni Enrico Arcanghel Jr.

Ipaghehele kita, isasayaw sa ere;
Ipikit ang mga mata, mahimbing
Na sana, iyong pagtulog,
Sa magdamag na mahaba;

Isalin mo, iyong iniinda,
Limutin ang mga hapdi,
At aking sisimsimin ang imbing
Pagpapasakit, mga tinamong paghihirap
Na dapat sanay sa akin.

Natatandaan mo ba,
Sa punong bayabas,
Natanaw mo, malayong lagusan,
Sa siyudad makislap, mapayapa,
Pangarap mo, sanay matamasa.

Babalutin kita ng aking bandila,
Iyong lampin sa pangungulila,
Paglalakbay sa paghahanap,
Ng kasagutan sa malayong lupa,
Tulog na anak, may bukas pa.

Hindi na kita makantahan, ihelehele pa,
Paos ang tinig, mabuway ang tayo,
Walang sandigan, ina'y baon sa lupa;
Ngunit darating muli, ang ilaw sa ibayo,
Hintayin natin, malapit na anak, malapit na.

oh naluha ako sa katha mo Enrico sagad to the bones talaga kailan kaya tayo makakatulog ng mahimbing?
